How to make short videos from Claude and ChatGPT

Your AI assistant can now edit your talking-head videos. Here is how to connect SpliceReel to Claude or ChatGPT, and what to ask once it is connected.

By the SpliceReel team

Most people already have an AI assistant open all day. Claude or ChatGPT writes the email, plans the week and drafts the caption. The one thing it could not do was the video itself: the clip sat on your phone while the assistant could only describe what to do with it.

That gap is closed. SpliceReel now connects to Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants, so you can turn a raw talking-head clip into an edited reel, change it, and plan the post, all from the chat you already use.

This guide covers how to connect, what to ask, and the two steps that still happen in your browser.

What connecting actually does

SpliceReel speaks MCP, the open standard assistants use to work with other apps. When you connect, your assistant gets a set of SpliceReel tools it can call on your behalf: start an edit, revise a video, write a script, write a post kit, translate captions, plan a post, check your credits.

It works on your account only, and only after you sign in and press Allow. It never sees your password or payment details, and you can disconnect it at any time.

Connect Claude

  1. In Claude, open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
  2. Name it SpliceReel and paste your SpliceReel address. You will find it in your dashboard under AI assistants.
  3. Press Connect, sign in to SpliceReel and press Allow.
  4. In a chat, switch the SpliceReel connector on from the tools menu.

Connect ChatGPT

  1. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Apps & Connectors. If you are asked to, turn on developer mode under Advanced.
  2. Choose Create, name it SpliceReel and paste the same address.
  3. Pick OAuth as the authentication, save, then sign in to SpliceReel and press Allow.
  4. In a chat, add SpliceReel from the tools menu.

Using Claude Code, Cursor or another tool with a config file? Create a personal token on the same AI assistants page and add it as a header. The full steps are on the AI assistants page.

What to ask

Talk to it the way you would brief an editor. A few requests that work well:

  • "Edit this video into a 45-second reel with the cinema look" with a link to your raw clip. SpliceReel fetches the file and the assistant hands you an editor link.
  • "Make the captions bigger and yellow" on a video that is ready. The change is saved as a new version you can undo.
  • "Add a list scene with the three tips at the start" to put a motion-graphic card on screen.
  • "Write me a 30-second script about our new menu", then record it on the teleprompter link you get back.
  • "Write the caption, hashtags and five hooks for my latest video" for a post kit.
  • "Plan it on my calendar for Friday on TikTok" to keep the week organised.

The assistant always checks the price before paid work starts. An edit costs credits exactly as it does in SpliceReel, and the first changes on every video are included.

The two steps that stay in your browser

SpliceReel has no media server: your footage is processed on your own device. That keeps it fast and private, and it means two steps happen in a browser tab rather than in the chat.

  • Reading a new video. After the assistant starts an edit, open the editor link once and keep it open for a minute while the speech is transcribed. The AI edit then starts on its own.
  • Rendering the MP4. When you are happy with the edit, press Export in the editor. Ask the assistant for the download link afterwards.

Everything else — revisions, scripts, captions, translations, the calendar — happens right in the chat.

Frequently asked questions

Which assistants can I use?

Claude on the web, desktop and mobile, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor and any other assistant that supports remote MCP servers over HTTP.

Does connecting cost anything?

No. Connecting is free, and paid work uses your credits exactly as it does in SpliceReel, with the price shown before anything starts.

Can the assistant see my password or card details?

No. You sign in to SpliceReel yourself and approve the assistant. It can work with your videos, scripts, calendar and credit balance, never your password or payment details.

How do I disconnect it?

Open AI assistants in your SpliceReel dashboard and press Disconnect. Access stops at once. Remove the connector in the assistant's own settings too, or it will ask you to approve it again.
